3 Iced Matcha Drink Recipes - Learn how to make Iced matcha water, iced matcha latte, and iced matcha lemonade at home! Super fast and easy recipe - takes less than 5 minutes each!

    Let's talk about Matcha!

    What is Matcha?

Matcha is finely ground green tea leaves. There are different types of green tea plants that are used for making green tea and that are used for making matcha powder. Matcha is gaining tons of popularity due to its amazing health benefits.

Where do you buy matcha and what to look for when buying matcha?

I personally either order them online or go to a local Japanese grocery store. They sell ceremonial grade matcha powder and that's what I buy them. The good matcha powder is vibrant green in color and has pleasant bitterness with a subtle floral tone to it. But you can't really see the color of the matcha due to how it's packaged and sold. My advice is to buy ceremonial grade matcha NOT culinary grade.

Ceremonial grade matcha vs. culinary grade matcha

Here is a side by side picture of matcha lemonade that's made with culinary grade matcha (on the left) and ceremonial grade matcha (on the right). You can certainly tell the difference in color, right?!!

    Culinary Grade Matcha

    • $ - they are much cheaper than ceremonial grade
    • Color - they are green but with yellowish and sometimes even brownish undertone
    • Bitter taste - I personally find them more bitter than ceremonial grade matcha with no floral tone
    • Use it in baking or cooking

    Ceremonial Grade Matcha

    • $$$ - they definitely cost more than culinary grade matcha (often $15-35 per ounce)
    • Bright color - they are vibrant green with no yellow/brown undertone
    • Better taste - there is pleasant bitterness with a subtle floral tone to it
    • Use for making drinks

Tools you can use to make delicious iced matcha drink

dissolving matcha powder in water with hand held milk frother
    • Matcha whisk - this is the most traditional way of preparing matcha. You can easily buy a matcha whisk online. You just need to small amount of water to matcha powder and whisk in a zig-zag motion until it looks frothy.
    • Blender - If you want frothy matcha latte, I can't think of any better tool than a blender. You don't have to sift the matcha powder. Just add your matcha powder and liquid, press the button, and you are done!
    • Hand-held milk frother - This is my personal favorite method. It's super easy and you don't have to worry about clumps of matcha ever!
    • Shaker or mason jar with a lid - In order to avoid the clumps of matcha, I recommend sifting the matcha powder and shaking them vigorously.

Iced Matcha Drink Recipe #1 - Iced Matcha latte

I have a healthy matcha latte (sweeten with Medjool date and addition of barley grass powder) recipe that you can make either hot or iced. This iced matcha is a lot simpler to make. All you need is matcha, milk of your choice (I used soy milk), and sweetener of your choice (I used agave nectar).

You can add vanilla extract to make it an iced vanilla matcha latte. This latte can be customized very easily. You can absolutely skip the sweetener if you would like. And I have made this using maple syrup, stevia, sugar, and honey before and they were all delicious!

Iced Matcha Drink #2 - Iced Matcha Water with Milk

You might ask me what's the difference between iced matcha latte and this one. The difference is the main component of iced matcha water is the water and it is spiked with milk of your choice at the end. So this option is a lot lighter (less calorie) than the latte option.

When I'm thirsty but don't want to drink plain water, this is my go-to option these days. This is light, refreshing, and a perfect afternoon pick-me-up!

Iced Matcha Drink #3 - Iced Matcha Lemonade

This matcha is perfect when you want to upgrade your lemonade. It requires the same ingredients as any lemonade - lemon, sugar (or sweetener of your choice), and water. I just add matcha powder and give it a quick mix with my milk frother until my matcha powder dissolves and serve with some ice. It's perfectly sweet, tangy, and refreshing. Due to caffeine in matcha powder, you are not just getting a boost from the sugar in lemonade but a boost from slow-releasing caffeine from matcha!

Between iced matcha latte, iced matcha water with milk, and iced matcha lemonade, what is your favorite? Tag me on my Instagram or Pinterest and let me know! Until then, Happy drinking, my friends!

    • Method: Mix
    • Cuisine: Japanese

    Ingredients

    Scale

    Iced Matcha Latte

    • 1-2 teaspoons matcha powder
    • 12 ounces milk of your choice (I used soy milk)
    • 2-3 teaspoons sweetener of your choice (optional - I used agave nectar)
    • Ice cubes

    Iced Matcha Water with Milk

    • 2-2.5 teaspoons matcha powder
    • 12 ounces of water
    • Sweetener of your choice (optional)
    • Milk of your choice, about 1-2 ounces (I used oat milk)
    • Ice cubes

    Iced Matcha Lemonade

    • Juice of a small lemon
    • 2-3 teaspoons of sweetener of your choice (I used agave nectar)
    • 1 teaspoon matcha powder
    • 8 ounces of water
    • Ice cubes

    Instructions

    Iced Matcha Latte

    1. In a blender, add the matcha powder, milk, and sweetener of your choice and blend for a minute until everything is dissolved.
    2. Pour it into a glass and add ice cubes.

    Iced Matcha Water with Milk

    1. In a tall glass, add water and matcha powder. By using a handheld milk frother, mix everything until matcha powder is dissolved completely.
    2. Add the ice cubes and pour some milk of your choice (optional - I used oat milk).

    Iced Matcha Lemonade

    1. In a glass, add the lemon juice, sweetener of your choice, water, and matcha powder.
    2. Using a handheld milk frother, mix everything until matcha powder is all dissolved.
    3. Add the ice cubes.

    Notes

    • Please feel free to adjust the amount of matcha powder to your liking.
    • For sweetener, I like to use agave nectar and maple syrup. The honey tastes great but it's hard to dissolve in cold water sometimes. You can always dilute honey with warm water first and add it to your matcha drinks.
    • For making matcha water with milk, adding your favorite coffee creamer (vanilla flavor) also works great! I've used soy creamer before and it was tasty!
    • For making lemonade, I like using agave nectar since it is already in a liquid form. If you prefer using sugar, you can make a simple syrup (Gently boil sugar and water (ration of 1:1) until all sugar dissolves and cool completely before making lemonade) and use it in the recipe.
